Normative data must be kept current so that the test remains meaningful for the people who take it today. In practice, this means regularly refreshing norms with up-to-date reference populations and checking that the test still fits the contexts in which it’s used. Demographic shifts—like changes in age structure, education levels, cultural background, and socioeconomic status—along with changes in how people train for or take the test, can all influence performance. By updating norms to reflect these factors, you maintain accurate interpretations of scores, preserve fairness, and prevent systematic bias that could distort comparisons over time. Updating only when a new test is invented, never updating, or updating only on a very long interval fails to address ongoing population and practice changes, leading to drift where old norms no longer represent current performance.
